There are more than 14,000 product categories, and in each of those categories, there are likely to be thousands, and even millions, of products. So, if you are thinking about coming up with a product of your own, then you should know that naming a product correctly is extremely important. 

This is something that many people don’t know—that the name of a product is just as important as the product itself. After all, if you name your new product something boring or uninformative, your potential customers will likely not show much interest in it.

A Good Product Name Creates a Good First Impression

When you first release your product to the public, you will want it to have a good first impression, the same way that people need good first impressions. A first impression is really nothing more than how a person will perceive your product when looking at it or hearing about it for the first time. 

For example, if a person doesn’t yet know what your product looks like but has heard of the name, that name will evoke a certain image in the person’s mind. If the name of your product is not really attractive or evokes unpleasant images, then the person may not have a good first impression of your product. 

Even if the person at hand doesn’t know anything about your product, if the name doesn’t ring true, that person may never bother to look into the product any further because they have already formed a negative opinion about it. This, of course, is not what you want for your product.

For that reason, the product naming process should be of utmost importance to you. You should never skip or rush through this process. If you do, you may miss out on other name options. 

Consider, for example, that a person hears about your product for the first time without knowing anything about it. If the name of the product is attractive and interesting, the name alone will urge the person to look into the product further. The person may look up the product online to see what it has to offer. Hence, the name of the product will be a factor that may contribute to the sale of that product. 

While it is hard to believe that something as simple as a name could have so much weight, it certainly holds true. 

Try to Use Descriptive Names

Now that you have a basic understanding of why the name of your product is so important, you might be wondering how you can choose a good name. There are many product naming strategies you can try, but some are more effective than others, depending on what kind of product you’re working with. A good strategy is to try to use a descriptive name. 

What does this involve, you might ask? A descriptive name has to do with putting some kind of useful information about the product into the actual name of that product. For example, if your product helps clean kitchen countertops, then your product name should refer to this in some way, like Counter Scrubber. 

While your product name doesn’t have to specifically be about the product’s purpose, it should be obvious. A person should be able to tell what a product might do just by hearing its name. That way, there will be little to no confusion concerning the product’s name or the product itself. 

What to Know

The last thing you want to do is get too fantastical with your product’s name. Some people like to use names that are grand and fantastical in an attempt to bring more attention to the product, but this often doesn’t work because these names are too vague. Instead, you should stick to the basics so that your potential customers will know what they’re dealing with when they come across your product’s name. 

If you can’t come up with any good ideas, you can always try making a pun out of the product’s name or play around with the name in a similar way. 

Stay Away from Names That are Too Long

Too long product names are never catchy. Not to mention, they are easy to forget. This is not what you want when people discover your product. 

A good rule to follow is to make sure your product’s name is only three words or less. A product with more than three words will start to sound jumbled and confusing to most people. This makes it hard to easily write down such a name or look it up on the internet. 

Ideally, your product’s name should only consist of one or two words. That way, the name will be catchy as well as easy to remember. It will also be easy to spell and search for on the internet.
